The pandemic panic may be easing as more Americans get vaccinated and mask mandates start to go away, but this doesn’t mean there are fewer hungry people. Feeding America projects that 42 million people (1 in 8), including 13 million children (1 in 6) may experience food insecurity this year. Those who have been most impacted by the pandemic were food insecure or at risk of food insecurity before COVID-19 and are facing greater hardship since the pandemic began.

Pandemic Projects Bolster Food Bank Seafood Supply

SeaShare sent four truckloads (144,000 pounds!) of seafood from Channel Fish Processing in Boston to food banks in Louisiana, Michigan, and New York in the end of March. This is one of several large projects we’ve pursued to generate additional protein for food banks across the country during the pandemic.

Soerensen is Executive VP of Global Sales and Marketing at American Seafoods Company LLC, where he has worked since February 2004. Pandemic Generosity Humbling

SeaShare and the Southeast Alaska Food Bank: Getting Seafood to Neighbors in Need

Thanks to Trident Seafoods, SeaShare has just sent 14,681 pounds of seafood to the Southeast Alaska Food Bank in Juneau. This seafood was delivereid to the refurbished freezer container that SeaShare installed for the SE Alaska Food Bank in 2019, greatly increasing the food bank's ability to store frozen food for local distribution.

SeaShare Receives ReFED COVID-19 Food Waste Solutions Fund Grant

SeaShare is excited to announce that we have received one of the very first ReFED COVID-19 Food Waste Solutions grants. This grant is being used to urgently send 750,000 seafood to food banks and feeding centers across the country. “COVID-19 has disrupted the regular flow of the food supply chain, making it difficult to get fresh, healthy food to the people who need it most and increasing the amount of food insecurity,” said Alexandria Coari, Capital and Innovation Director at ReFED, a national nonprofit working to advance solutions to reduce the amount of food waste. “The work of organizations like SeaShare is urgent, and we’re excited to get them the critical support they need from the ReFED COVID-19 Food Waste Solutions Fund.”

E&E Foods Gives Big for Alaska

E&E Foods has just generously donated 110,000 pounds of nutritious wild Alaska smelt for food banks, and SeaShare helped coordinate the first delivery for the Food Bank of Alaska - 30,000 pounds (120,000 servings) - with three more similarly sized donations scheduled to help address the growing needs in communities hit by the COVID-19 virus.
