Done with the first leg of the race, that is. In light winds and rain, Team Pure & Wild made it to Victoria in 5th place overall, and was the first boat under sail to ring the bell yesterday. Many other teams struggled later in the day, with 40 knot winds and rough seas, and were forced to turn back or take shelter off course.

Each year there is an amazing array of seafood on display at Seafood Expo North America in Boston. Where does all that seafood go? It gets donated to the Greater Boston Food Bank! How cool is that? For many years, SeaShare has helped coordinate the donation by expo exhibitors to the food bank. The Greater Boston Convention and Visitors Bureau supports SeaShare, coordinates the logistics, and we save thousands of pounds of amazing seafood from being thrown away. This year 30,800 pounds were donated to the Greater Boston Food Bank, that's over 120,000 servings of seafood for people struggling with hunger in Boston and throughout New England.

The company served 1,000 Tilapia Power Bowls during the Seafood Expo North America last week in Boston, which helped the company meet the 5,000 pound goal. For every Tilapia Power Bowl sampled, Regal Springs pledged to donate five pounds of its responsibly raised tilapia to SeaShare.

The Anti-Hunger Policy Conference, jointly hosted by Feeding America and FRAC (Food Research and Action Center) took place in Washington, D.C. in early March. It was inspiring to be in the room with so many anti-hunger advocates, many of them on the frontlines in D.C., all fired up and ready to fight for the social safety net. Researchers were also eager to share the latest results on the impact of anti-hunger programs on America's poor.

We were excited to once again support the Orca Bowl at the University of Washington on February 25th. This year's winning team, the Tacoma Science and Math Institute, showed everyone their amazing prowess in the field of ocean science, and will represent Washington State at the National Ocean Sciences Bowl held in Corvallis, Oregon in April. Orca Bowl is a program of Washington Sea Grant.

An energetic group of 33 seafood industry professionals, who are recent graduates of the National Fisheries Institute's (NFI) Future Leaders program, volunteered with SeaShare at the San Francisco-Marin Food Bank yesterday, repacking over 3,000 pounds of food. This was the culmination of a year-long program in which the Future Leaders annually find new and creative ways to support SeaShare's mission to bring seafood to food banks across the U.S.
