US Seafood Industry Gives Seafood to Houston and Miami Food Banks in Response to Hurricanes Harvey and Irma

SeaShare, a National Non-Profit, Partners with Major US Seafood Companies to Donate 2 million Servings of Seafood in Houston and Miami, and Across the U.S.

Bainbridge Island, WA: Today, SeaShare, a non-profit dedicated to bringing seafood to food banks, announced they have partnered with major US seafood companies to deliver 2 million servings of seafood to food banks in Houston, Miami, and ten other states since hurricanes Harvey and Irma made landfall in August and September.

“The disasters our country has faced in recent weeks are unprecedented. Thankfully, the seafood industry has responded with great generosity to the urgent needs in Houston, in Florida, and in states where people are struggling with hunger everyday” said Jim Harmon, Executive Director of SeaShare.

SeaShare has received seafood donations and pledges from companies across the U.S., including the Alaska Seafood Marketing Institute, Clear Springs Foods, Gorton's Seafood, Harvest Select, High Liner Foods, North Pacific Seafoods, Ocean Beauty Seafoods, Orca Bay Seafoods, Regal Springs, Sealord North America, Trident Seafoods, and UniSea. Custom Cold Express and Preferred Freezer Services have donated freight and cold storage. Thanks to a strong partnership with Feeding America, SeaShare is able to immediately send nutritious seafood donations to food banks.

“The weeks and months ahead will be difficult for people working to rebuild their lives. We are grateful to partner with a generous industry that is helping to bring high quality protein to people in need,” said Jim Harmon. “SeaShare is now actively seeking shelf-stable seafood donations for our fellow Americans in Puerto Rico, who are experiencing severe food, water, fuel, and electricity shortages in the aftermath of hurricane Maria. If your company has cans or pouches of seafood to give, please contact us at info@seashare.org.”

SeaShare distributed 8 million servings of high protein seafood in 24 states last year. We partner with over 200 fishermen, processors, distributors, packaging companies, cold storage operators, and freight companies to work collaboratively in the fight against hunger.
