Press Release: SeaShare Delivers 15,000 Pounds of Donated Halibut to People Struggling with Hunger in Nome and Kotzebue, Alaska

National Non-profit, Kodiak fishermen, Ocean Beauty Seafoods, US Coast Guard, Norton Sound Economic Development Corporation and Maniilaq Association Team Up to Fight Hunger With Donation of Halibut in Western Alaska

Bainbridge Island, WA: Today, Seashare, a non-profit dedicated to bringing seafood to food banks, announced they have partnered with Kodiak fishermen, Ocean Beauty Seafoods, the US Coast Guard, Norton Sound Economic Development Corporation (NSEDC) and Maniilaq Association to donate 15,000 pounds of halibut for people struggling with hunger in Nome, Kotzebue, and surrounding communities.

“Stores of fish decrease in winter as people eat up most of the summer’s subsistence haul. With melting sea ice, hunting for animals in the winter months is becoming more difficult. SeaShare is donating nutritious Alaska halibut to help bridge this gap”, said Jim Harmon, Executive Director at SeaShare.

This is the fifth year SeaShare has donated seafood in remote western Alaska. Ocean Beauty Seafoods processed the halibut from fishermen in Kodiak. The US Coast Guard’s Air Station Kodiak provided transportation on their C-130 transport plane, and NSEDC and Maniilaq Association are coordinating the donation to people in their communities who are struggling with hunger.

Ocean Beauty Seafoods’ Plant Manager James Turner says it is part of giving back to the community. “It’s just the right thing to do. This helps communities in Alaska, especially the outer lying areas of Alaska.”

SeaShare donated over 185,000 pounds of high protein seafood throughout Alaska last year, and 30,000 pounds went to remote villages in Western Alaska.
