Delivering Seafood to Kotzebue and Nome: A Stellar Team Effort!

All packed up and ready for loading in Kodiak

Every year the generous fishermen and processors in Kodiak generate more donated fish than we can distribute locally. SeaShare works to find other locations that need seafood and seeks out freight options.

For the past four years we've worked with the USCG Air Station Kodiak to fly seafood to Kotzebue, where the Maniilaq Corporation receives, separates according to village populations, and distributes the seafood to needy families in twelve remote villages and Kotzebue. For the past two years we've included a stop in Nome, where the Kawerak Corporation coordinates distribution to villages. Both Maniilaq and Kawerak recruit regional air carriers and others to ship our frozen seafood on to the villages. To get all of this done, we've built a great network that includes:

- Gulf of Alaska fishermen

- Kodiak processors

- USCG C130 Crew

-  Maniilaq Corporation

- Kawerak Corporation

- Regional air carriers (Ravn, Bering Air, Ryan, etc.)

This annual project is a great example of SeaShare's ability to recruit partners who want to help, but could not donate if SeaShare didn't supply the framework to utilize each organization's particular strength.

For this summer's delivery, which took place this week, Ocean Beauty Seafoods and Trident Seafoods supplied 14,000 pounds of frozen halibut for delivery in Kotzebue and Nome.

A huge thank you to all of our partners who worked to get seafood to rural western Alaska. You make this work possible!
