Spring
2010
2009 will
be remembered as a difficult year for everyone; individuals,
companies, organizations and foundations alike. Even in a
year of reduced resources, SeaShare helped the seafood industry
donate 7 million servings of nutritious seafood to Americans
across the country. SeaShare distributed over 344,000 lbs.
of canned salmon and over 352,000 lbs. of breaded Pollock
portions. Miscellaneous frozen retail fish products , salmon
patties and steaks represented 706,000 lbs.
Seafood was distributed to 17 states across the continental
United States and Alaska. Washington state was the largest
recipient of donated seafood, distributed through Food Lifeline
to 179 smaller food banks. SeaShare and Food Lifeline share
a long history, working together to provide nutrition to the
Western Washington food bank network. SeaShare received Food
Lifeline’s Outstanding Food Donor Award for 2009.
In 2009 American Seafoods became the first SeaShare donor
to reach 10 Million donated meals. SeaShare awarded American
Seafoods Group with a recognition award at Global Aquaculture
Alliance’s October Conference.

Thank
You to National Fisheries Institute
SeaShare wishes to thank all of the NFI members who have
contributed so generously to hunger-relief efforts this
past year. Food banks accept all food types, but high-protein
items like seafood are the hardest to obtain, and the first
to run out. NFI members helped SeaShare combine donations
of products, services, and funds to remain one of the largest
sources of protein to the food bank network.
NFI members are also
sending a clear message that the seafood industry cares
about the people in our communities - especially those
who can benefit the most from a good meal. NFI donors
are improving diets, fighting obesity, building markets,
and supporting sustainable fisheries.
The total is greater
than the sum of the parts. Thank you.
What
Did You Do To Feed Your Neighbors?
SeaShare saw a remarkable
number of companies and individuals with innovative ideas

in 2009. Here are just a few examples:

innovative ideas and collaborations that enhance the distribution
of seafood to hungry Americans. SeaShare’s donation
model brings together several donations (material, services,
and funds) to generate volumes that no single entity could
justify or sustain. If you have products, services, funds,
or an idea to donate, please contact us at www.seashare.org.

Fish
Flying to Alaskan Villages
A Coast
Guard C-130 flew 27,000 lbs. of coho salmon to Kotzebue, Alaska
on Dec. 28. Over eleven villages with 870 households were
expected to be served with this donation.
The salmon donation from Seashare to Food Bank of Alaska,
originated with the Purse Seine Vessel Owners Association
and their fishermen in Southeast Alaska. The Purse Seine Vessel
Owners Association donated a portion of its catch, while Southeast
Alaska processors ( Silver Bay Seafoods) donated their processing,
packaging and freezing capabilities. Alaska Marine Lines and
Tote Ocean Trailer Express shipped the finished product to
Anchorage at no charge. From there, the Food Bank of Alalska
worked with various organizations, including the U.S. Coast
Guard, to distribute the donation to residents of Kotzebue
and surrounding villages. This shipment was part of a food
drive started last September by Wells Fargo Bank, NANA Regional
Corp. and the Food Bank of Alaska.
