| WELCOME TO SEASHARE AND THE PARTNERSHIPS TO END HUNGER |
|||||
| By Tuck Donnelly, Executive Director People often ask us what our organization does. There has never been an easy, or short, answer. From the beginning, the work at SeaShare has reflected an expression of hope and generosity that was conceived, supported, and developed by the fishermen and seafood companies of the North Pacific. Our success has been driven by an industry that, at its core, wants to do the right thing. It is an industry that abhors waste, and it is an industry that accepts the responsibilities that acompany policies allowing seafood companies to reap the benefits of a public resource. Our new name, SeaShare, reflects not only our expansion into a national organization, with operations nationwide, but the spirit of our mission. The early mission was to find ways to help alleviate the massive problem of HUNGER in America. In the very beginning, under the banner of Terra Marine Research and Education, we began breaking ground in the Alaska fisheries. Terra Marine was granted experimental fishing permits by the National Marine Fisheries Service, to focus specifically on bycatch (the fish caught unintentionally while targeting another specie). We undertook extensive, methodical, scientific reasearch to demonstrate the effectiveness of retaining prohibited (up to that point) bycatch for hunger relief. In 1994, Terra Marine changed its name to Northwest Food Strategies, where we built upon the success of those first programs and expanded the scope of our regional intentions; eventually becoming the largest single private source of protein for hunger relief in America. SeaShare now continues the extroadinary tradition and charter of our earlier ventures; enrolling production partners and service providers nationwide to increase the critical supply of fish products for hungry people throughout the United States. It important to understand that the success of SeaShare is not a simple equation. Our success is truly dependent upon the generousity of those companies and individuals who care about the needs of low-income people in our country. These partners have donated products, services, and money to support the work of SeaShare. This is their program, and our new name celebrates their commitment to the growing strength of Americans looking out for Americans. HOME |
