Mission and Milestones
SeaShare has succeeded in developing a series of innovative hunger-relief programs. The significance of our program activity is reflected in the following accomplishments:
1. Improved management and resource utilization in our nations fisheries by reducing unnecessary discard of fish
2. Developed an entirely new source of high-protein food for people seeking food assistance throughout the United States
3. Facilitated pro-business partnerships to harvest, process, portion, package and deliver millions of pounds of top grade seafood products from fishing companies in Alaska, the Pacific Northwest, the Midwest and the East Coast to food banks in every region of the country.
4. Awarded Americas Second Harvest Hungers Hope Award for seven consecutive years for the ongoing success in developing one of the single largest sources of protein for hunger relief in the United States
5. Awarded the Environmental Hero Award by NOAA, Dept. of Commerce.
The intent of SeaShares program activity is to increase the amount of portioned, packaged seafood available for distribution through food banks, soup kitchens, shelters and hospices. Obtaining an adequate supply of protein for people who need food assistance is one of the biggest challenges facing hunger-relief organizations.
SeaShare identifies potential seafood opportunities, then designs donation programs that meet the needs of the donors and the recipients. SeaShare enrolls program partners and provides the logistical support necessary to process, package, store, and deliver the products to food banks across the counry. All donations are distributed through America's Second Harvest's network, which includes approximately 80% of all food banks in the U.S.
Total donations since the inception of SeaShare activities is over 10.5 million pounds, or 42 million meals. Last year's total net weight received for distribution was 3.6 million pounds. Our goal for 2003 is 5 million pounds
